The Sak Yant Tattoo is a Traditional Thai Tattoo that has both Spiritual and Cultural Significance. The Sak Yant is applied by a Master (holy man) using the Hand Poke method with a Steel Needle. An Authentic Sak Yant requires

The Sak Yant Tattoo offers protection to the wearer and serves as a Talisman of Affirmation for a personal quality, quest or goal.
Sak Yant Chiang Mai offers in-house sessions using traditional hand-poked methods. Experienced Ajarns (Sak Yant masters) visit and work from a prepared, comfortable space in Chiang Mai’s Old City.
Appointments are scheduled in advance, with pricing typically starting from 2,000–3,500 baht per hour, depending on the Ajarn and the time required. This includes the offering given to the practitioner.
Experience Sak Yant in a traditional temple setting in the Chiang Mai countryside, where it is performed by a practicing monk (For Men) or an Ajarn (for Females) in accordance with local customs and rituals.
For small to medium designs, pricing is:
3,500 baht for the first person
2,000 baht for each additional person
This fee covers transport and coordination. A separate offering (donation) is given directly to the monk.

It is wise to be cautious of tattoo shops that position themselves in nightlife areas or cater to walk-in customers seeking spontaneous tattoos after drinking. Many all-day tattoo and art studios in places like Bangkok and Phuket market their work as “Bamboo Tattoo” or “Traditional Thai Tattoo,” but these are often imitations that lack the spiritual foundation of true Sak Yant.
To Thai locals and practitioners, such tattoos are usually easy to recognize and can be seen as culturally insensitive when presented as authentic. In many cases, these imitation Sak Yants are also significantly more expensive – sometimes costing two to five times more than a genuine Sak Yant performed by a qualified Ajarn or monk.
